BAC Super VC12

Description

Intended to compete directly with the 747-200, BAC's Super VC12 could carry four hundred passengers in a three-class layout. To make up for the additional weight and corresponding engine thrust needed, a fuel tank was fitted in the vertical fin. While not as popular as the 747, the Super VC12 did manage to turn a profit and was ordered by several airlines not wanting to part with the money needed for Boeing's more expensive counterpart.

First flying on 1 September 1973, the Super VC12 was produced at BAC's Large Aircraft Facility, the former Bristol factory at Filton. Production continued until 1992, when production switched to the similar but more advanced VC14.
